About the project

At Sysav, we believe that waste can power a sustainable future. Every day, we recycle valuable materials and turn what cannot be recycled into energy for homes and industry. But this also makes us Skåne’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide. SkyZero is how we change that.

With SkyZero, our ambitious carbon capture project at the Spillepeng combined heat and power plant in Malmö, we aim to remove up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year — 90–95% of emissions from two lines. It’s a bold leap that will significantly shrink our footprint and strengthen southern Sweden’s climate leadership.

By capturing both biogenic and fossil CO2, SkyZero not only reduces emissions but actively removes carbon that would otherwise reach the atmosphere.

The captured volumes are turned into certified carbon credits that can help municipalities and local companies achieve their net-zero goals.

The journey began in September 2022 with a feasibility study supported by Industriklivet. The results were positive, and in April 2024 our Board of Directors together with our owner municipalities gave us the mandate to proceed: meeting the board’s conditions and delivering the technical and financial basis for an investment decision planned for 2027.

SkyZero is more than a technological milestone. It shows how cities, municipalities, and industry can lead the shift to net zero — by coupling world-class recycling and energy recovery with carbon capture at scale.

Our Mission is clear:
SkyZero will be operational in 2030
