How does it work?

It’s not magic – it’s proven technology. SkyZero uses advanced, well-established processes to capture carbon and create a cleaner future. By combining innovation with reliable engineering, we’re turning waste into a climate solution.

The waste-to-energy process generates both fossil and biogenic carbon dioxide. Fossil CO₂ originates from materials like plastics and synthetic textiles, while biogenic CO₂ comes from organic waste such as food, paper, and wood. Together, they account for significant emissions when waste is converted into electricity and heat. With CCS, Sysav can capture these emissions at the source and prevent them from reaching the atmosphere — turning a challenge into a powerful climate solution.

Turning technology into climate action

The carbon capture process at SkyZero will be based on proven amine technology. Flue gases from the plant are led through an absorber where amines selectively bind the CO2. The CO2-rich solution is then heated in a separate unit, releasing the CO2 in pure form while the amines are regenerated and returned to the cycle.

Once captured, the CO2 will be compressed, cooled, and transported to permanent storage sites deep underground. In these geological formations, often several kilometers below the seabed, the CO2 is securely stored where it gradually mineralises. This ensures that the carbon is permanently removed from the atmosphere and cannot contribute to climate change.
